March was a vibrant reflection of movement across culture, fashion, and the voices shaping our communities. It was a month grounded in celebration and intention, where we honoured the women who have redefined style and identity, showcased creativity across cultures, and introduced new pathways for connection and growth. Each moment carried a sense of progress and possibility.

At UCOF, these experiences went beyond celebration. They became opportunities to amplify meaningful stories, uplift creative talent, and strengthen a community where culture, creativity, and leadership continue to thrive.

On March 3, we joined communities around the world in celebrating the culmination of Lunar New Year with the Lantern Festival, a time rich in tradition, renewal, and cultural expression. This moment highlights the importance of new beginnings, shared joy, and the traditions that connect generations, and we were proud to celebrate alongside our Chinese communities and all those observing this special season, wishing everyone a year filled with growth, prosperity, good health, and new opportunities.

This March, we proudly celebrated International Women’s Day by recognizing the achievements and influence of women within our community and beyond. To kick off the month-long celebration, we spotlighted Navdeep Parmanand, Founder and CEO of Celebrate Your Curves and UCOF’s 2024 Viewers’ Choice Award (Halifax) recipient. Her leadership and advocacy continue to champion confidence, representation, and inclusive fashion, with her recent feature on the Startup Canada podcast further highlighting the impact of UCOF’s work and the importance of uplifting diverse voices. Navdeep’s journey is a reminder that when women lead with purpose, communities grow stronger.

We also highlighted a dynamic group of female designers whose bold and timeless creations continue to inspire and redefine fashion within our community, shaping important conversations around identity, confidence, and representation while reflecting the power of women supporting women and driving the industry forward.

The Women’s History Month Fashion Fact explored how women have continuously shaped fashion as a tool for expression, independence, and progress. Influential figures such as Coco Chanel introduced more practical and comfortable designs at a time when restrictive clothing defined women’s wardrobes, reflecting a shift toward freedom and modernity.

In 1966 Yves Saint Laurent redefined power dressing with Le Smoking, a tuxedo designed specifically for women that challenged traditional gender norms and demonstrated that elegance and strength can coexist.

As women stepped into new roles, especially during periods like World War I, fashion evolved alongside them to embrace functionality, confidence, and independence, reinforcing that fashion is a reflection of societal progress and that women have always been at the center of that change.

This month’s Fashion History Rewind explored the evolution of women’s style as a powerful story of resilience, expression, and transformation. Not long ago, women wearing trousers was considered controversial, as 19th-century norms required skirts and corsets, yet over time these expectations were challenged and what was once seen as rebellion became everyday expression. Across the world, women’s fashion has remained deeply rooted in culture and identity, from the vibrant aso ebi and kente of West Africa to the intricate sarees and lehengas of South Asia, the symbolic hanbok, qipao, and kimono of East Asia, and the flowing abayas and kaftans of the Middle East and North Africa.

Iconic pieces have also evolved alongside these cultural shifts, with the corset reimagined as a symbol of confidence, the little black dress remaining timeless, and the mini skirt and sneakers transitioning into everyday essentials. From past to present, women’s fashion continues to reflect creativity, cultural pride, and the freedom to redefine norms.

UCOF marked an exciting milestone this month with the official launch of our new website, designed to keep our community connected and make it easier to explore programs, partnerships, blog stories, and impact.

A key highlight is the introduction of the Designers Marketplace, a dedicated space where audiences can discover, connect with, and support UCOF designers in one place, showcasing a range of creations that celebrate creativity, culture, and craftsmanship.

We extend our sincere appreciation to the Foundation For Black Communities (FFBC) for their support in making this project possible.

This month, we continued to highlight the Black History Annual Essay Competition led by the Council of African Professionals in collaboration with UCOF, the Young Leaders Mentorship Program, and Pure Gold Foundation. Centered on the theme Leading, Building, Transforming, the initiative encourages Black youth to reflect on leadership, innovation, and their role in shaping the future. Selected participants will be presenting at the award ceremony in Saint John on May 9.

Sponsors and partners are cordially invited to support this impactful initiative through prize funding and program delivery, creating meaningful opportunities to invest in and uplift the next generation of leaders and change makers.

Looking Ahead

March reminded us that culture, creativity, and community are always growing, just as the stories we share through fashion and leadership continue to evolve. From celebrating women and cultural traditions to launching new platforms and empowering youth, this month reflected meaningful progress, deeper connections, and renewed possibility.

As we move forward, our commitment remains clear. We will continue to create spaces where voices are amplified, talent is nurtured, and communities are strengthened. The journey ahead is filled with opportunity, and together, we will keep building, inspiring, and shaping a future where culture and creativity thrive.
