April was a month of momentum, opportunity, and deepened community impact. Across Atlantic Canada, new doors opened for creatives, and meaningful connections continued to grow. It was a clear reminder of what is possible when vision is met with action. At UCOF, we remain committed to creating spaces where culture is celebrated, talent is nurtured, and community stays at the heart of everything we do.

Fashion Facts: Culture Behind the Trends
This month, our Fashion Facts series explored how global cultures continue to shape modern fashion. From textiles and patterns to silhouettes and styling, many of today’s trends are rooted in traditions passed down through generations.
Behind every look is a story shaped by identity, craftsmanship, and cultural expression. We also highlighted how fashion shows extend beyond the runway, serving as powerful platforms for storytelling and connection where diverse creatives come together to celebrate shared experiences.

Fashion History Rewind
In April, we spotlighted the Gele, a traditional headwrap worn by Yoruba women in Nigeria. More than an accessory, the Gele represents elegance, identity, and cultural pride.
Across generations, it has remained a symbol of confidence and artistry. Today, it continues to evolve, bridging tradition with modern fashion while preserving its cultural significance.

Inspiring the Next Generation: Youth Celebration and Essay Competition
We are excited to highlight the upcoming Black History Youth Celebration and Essay Competition in Saint John.
Hosted by the Council of African Professionals in collaboration with UCOF and community partners, this event brings together youth, families, and community leaders for an afternoon of storytelling, cultural performances, and recognition.
Under the theme “Leading Beyond Borders: Shaping Africa’s Future, Voice by Voice,” the initiative creates space for young people to share their voices, perspectives, and leadership journeys.
Celebrating Our Volunteers
April also marked National Volunteer Week, a time to recognize the individuals who power UCOF’s work behind the scenes.
From planning and coordination to show-day execution, our volunteers are essential to every success. Their dedication, passion, and commitment continue to move our mission forward. They are more than volunteers. They are culture carriers and the foundation of our community.

Funder Highlight
Behind every milestone is a network of supporters who believe in the power of culture, creativity, and representation.
With the support of Foundation for Black Communities, we have been able to deliver impactful initiatives such as Empowered Strides, our youth-focused program, expanded sewing workshops for immigrant women, and engaging summer camps for children. The investment has also strengthened the operational capacity needed to sustain and grow our work.
This support continues to help us create spaces where individuals feel seen, supported, and inspired to grow. We extend our sincere gratitude to the Foundation for Black Communities and the Government of Canada for their continued belief in our vision.

Looking Ahead
April reminded us that growth is rooted in opportunity, connection, and purpose. From welcoming new participants to opening pathways for creatives and celebrating cultural impact, this month set a strong foundation for the season ahead.
As we move forward, we remain committed to building spaces where creativity thrives, voices are amplified, and communities grow together.
